Sales funnel strategy for growing companies

A sales funnel strategy is the choice of funnel shape that suits how your buyers decide. Pick the wrong shape and no amount of copywriting fixes it: a direct booking funnel aimed at cautious buyers produces silence, while a long nurture sequence aimed at urgent buyers loses them to faster competitors. This article helps a growing company choose between three shapes, explains what you give up with each, and shows how to set the chosen one up on the levelpartner.ai platform.

Three shapes, and who they suit

Direct booking. Enquiry page, booking page, call. It suits buyers with an urgent, specific need who already know they want help: a broker client whose fixed rate ends next month, a landlord with an empty property. You give up depth of qualification, because people book before you know much about them.

Nurture first. Download or signup, an email sequence over weeks, then an invitation to talk. It suits buyers who are still working out the problem: a business owner wondering whether to bring in a consultant. You give up speed. The first conversation happens weeks after the first contact.

Application. A longer form or questionnaire, a review by your team, then an invitation to a call for those who fit. It suits high-value work with limited capacity, such as a consultancy taking on a few large engagements a quarter. You give up volume, because many people will not fill in a long form.

How to choose

Ask two questions. How urgent is the buyer's problem when they first find you? And how much does a bad-fit first call cost you? Urgent problems and cheap calls point to direct booking. Slow problems point to nurture. Expensive calls and limited capacity point to an application.

Illustration: three firms, three strategies

Consider three hypothetical firms. A 25-person mortgage brokerage whose buyers face rate deadlines would suit direct booking. A 70-person management consultancy whose buyers take months to commit would suit nurture first. A 15-person specialist agency with room for four new clients a quarter would suit an application, perhaps reviewing around 40 applications to fill those slots.

Many companies end up running two shapes side by side: direct booking for urgent visitors and nurture for everyone else. That works, as long as each has its own entry page and the follow-up does not cross over.

Before you start

  • A decision on the shape, written down with the reason.
  • The pipeline stages from your sales funnel stages in place in Opportunities.
  • Content for the shape: booking availability, nurture emails, or the application questions.
  • Agreement on how quickly the team will respond to each type of entry.

How to set it up

  1. Choose direct booking, nurture first or application.
  2. Go to Sites, open Funnels and click New Funnel.
  3. Build the entry page with the form for your shape.
  4. For direct booking, click Add New Page in the Pages drawer and add the calendar.
  5. Click Save, then Publish.
  6. In Automation, open Workflows and click + Create Workflow.
  7. Choose Start from scratch.
  8. Click Add New Trigger and choose Form Submitted.
  9. Add the Form Is filter, select your form and save.
  10. For nurture, add Send Email and Wait actions in turn.
  11. Add a Goal Event so contacts who book leave.
  12. For applications, add Send Internal Notification for the reviewer.
  13. Turn on the Publish toggle and set an eight-week review.

What most strategy advice gets wrong

Funnel advice tends to treat the shape as a matter of taste, or to push whichever shape the author sells. The shape should come from your buyers' urgency and your capacity, and both can change. A consultancy with a full diary should move from direct booking to an application. A firm with empty capacity should do the reverse. Review the shape at least twice a year.

What it replaces and the time to run it

A deliberate strategy replaces the default most companies have, which is a contact page and hope. It also replaces arguments about lead quality, because the shape is designed to produce the kind of lead you need.

Each shape needs about an hour a week to run. Direct booking needs fast replies. Nurture needs a monthly review of email performance. Applications need a reviewer who answers within two working days.

The common mistake

Running an application funnel without the capacity to review applications quickly. Buyers who fill in a long form expect a response. A week's silence turns your best prospects into someone else's clients.

When not to change strategy

If your current funnel is producing enough good clients, leave the shape alone and improve the steps within it. Changing shape resets your data, and you lose months of comparison. A successful sales funnel often comes from fixing one step rather than switching models.

Troubleshooting

Direct booking produces many no-shows. Buyers book without commitment. Add a reminder sequence and one qualifying question before the calendar appears.

Nurture contacts never book. The sequence never asks. Put a clear booking prompt in the last two emails, and an easy reply option in the earlier ones.

Applications come in thin. The form is long but the questions are vague. Ask fewer, sharper questions that tell you about fit.

Both shapes send emails to the same contact. The contact entered through two doors. Add a check that removes them from nurture once they book.

Frequently asked questions

Can one company run more than one strategy?

Yes, and many should. Run direct booking for urgent buyers and nurture for early-stage readers, with separate entry pages and tags.

How long before I know the strategy works?

Eight to twelve weeks for direct booking, longer for nurture, because the sequence itself takes weeks. Judge applications by the quality of clients won.

Does strategy differ for B2B buyers?

Larger B2B sales involve several people per account, which favours nurture and application shapes. The B2B sales funnel guide covers multi-contact accounts.

Where should I start if I have no funnel at all?

Start with direct booking. It is the quickest to build and shows you how buyers behave. Add nurture once you see how many visitors are not ready to talk.
