Last touch attribution: how it works and how to set it up

Last touch attribution gives all the credit for a sale to the final interaction before the person converted. It is the simplest model to run and the easiest to misread. This article answers when that model gives you a fair answer, when it flatters the wrong channel, and how to read the latest-source view in the levelpartner.ai platform so that your team acts on it correctly. Set up properly, it tells you which campaign is closing enquiries this month.

How the model assigns credit

Picture a prospect who reads a blog post found through search, sees a retargeting ad two weeks later, then clicks a link in your newsletter and books a call. Under the last-touch rule, the newsletter gets the whole sale. The blog post and the ad get nothing.

That is not wrong, it is partial. The newsletter really did prompt the booking. It just did not create the interest. The model answers the question "what pushed them over the line" and ignores "what brought them to us". Keep those two questions separate and the model becomes useful.

Where the platform records the last touch

Each contact on the platform carries a first source and a latest source. The latest source updates when the person comes back through a new tracked link, form or call. Contact and opportunity widgets on a dashboard can filter on First Attribution or Latest Attribution, so the same won deals can be read either way.

So you do not need to configure a separate model. You need clean tracking so the latest source is accurate, and a habit of reading the right view for the right decision. If you want the first view explained alongside it, see how marketing attribution works end to end.

Before you start

  • Tracking parameters are on every link in ads, emails, SMS campaigns and social posts.
  • Phone enquiries come in on tracked numbers, so calls register as a touch.
  • Opportunities have values and are marked won or lost promptly.
  • You know your average sales cycle length in days.

How to set it up

  1. Audit last month's emails and ads for missing tracking parameters.
  2. Fix untagged links in any workflow that sends emails or texts.
  3. Give each paid channel that drives calls its own tracking number.
  4. Go to Dashboard, open your dashboard and click Edit Dashboard.
  5. Click + Add Widget and add Opportunity Revenue Over Time.
  6. In Conditions, click Add Filter, select Attribution, then Latest Attribution.
  7. Click +AND in that group and set Status to Won.
  8. Set Group By to Session Source and click Save.
  9. Use the widget's Duplicate option and switch the copy to First Attribution.
  10. Click Save Changes.
  11. Set the date range to cover at least two sales cycles.
  12. Mark channels that rank high on latest but low on first.

When last touch is the right lens

Use it when your sales cycle is short. If most clients book within a day or two of first contact, the first and last touches are often the same, and the simple model tells the truth. A mortgage broker taking urgent remortgage enquiries is a good example.

Use it for tuning, not funding. Last touch is good at telling you which email subject, which SMS reminder or which landing page converts people who are already warm. It is poor at telling you where to spend to find new people.

Illustration: a 25-person mortgage brokerage comparing two views

Suppose a brokerage closes 120 cases in a quarter. Under latest source, the monthly newsletter is credited with 48 of them and paid search with 18. Under first source, paid search brought in 52 of the 120 clients and the newsletter only 6. With numbers like these, cutting search because it looks weak on last touch would starve the newsletter of the people it later converts.

The mistake most people make

The common mistake

Using last touch to decide the budget. Channels that sit at the end of the journey, such as email, branded search and retargeting, always look brilliant under this model because they catch people who were already coming. Cut the upstream channel and those bottom channels dry up a month or two later.

Time it takes each week

Fifteen minutes. Read the latest-source view each Monday to see which campaigns closed bookings, and pass anything surprising to whoever writes the emails. The heavier work is the monthly comparison with first source, which takes about an hour and belongs in the same meeting as your pipeline review. For multi-step journeys, a multi touch attribution record shows everything in between.

When not to use it

Do not use it on its own when your sales cycle runs beyond a few weeks or involves several people on the buying side. A consultancy selling a six-month programme to a leadership team will have a dozen touches before signature, and crediting the last email is close to meaningless. In that case, start from first source and read last touch only as a conversion signal.

Avoid it, too, for comparing a brand channel with an acquisition channel. They do different jobs, and one model will always favour one of them.

Troubleshooting

Every sale credits "direct". People typed your web address or clicked an untagged bookmark at the end. That is often true, but it can also mean your emails lack tracking. Check the links in your last three sends.

Latest source never changes. Returning contacts are arriving through routes the platform cannot see, such as replying to an old email thread. Add tracked links to follow-up emails and calendar invites.

The report disagrees with the ad platform. Ad platforms usually count a conversion if their ad was seen at any point within a window. That is a different rule. Expect the numbers to differ and rely on the platform's widgets for revenue.

Phone sales show no touch at all. The caller dialled your main line. Put tracking numbers on ads and landing pages, and keep the main line for existing clients.

Frequently asked questions

Is last touch the same as last click?

Close, but not identical. Last click counts only clicks. On the platform, a tracked phone call or form submission can also update the latest source, so the last touch can be a call rather than a click.

Can I see first and last touch together?

Yes. Put a widget filtered on First Attribution next to one filtered on Latest Attribution, over the same date range, and compare them. Channels that are strong on one and weak on the other are the ones that need a conversation before any budget moves.

Should a short-cycle business bother with anything else?

Often not. If first and latest source agree for most of your deals, a more elaborate marketing attribution model adds work without changing a decision.

Does last touch work for referrals?

Only if the referral arrives with a trackable link or a recorded answer to a source question. A referred client who searches your name and clicks the first result will show as organic search unless you ask them.
