Multi channel attribution: how it works and how to set it up

Multi channel attribution puts every channel that brings you clients, online and offline, paid and free, into one report measured on the same terms. Its job is fairness between channels: referrals, events, email, phone, ads and organic search all compete for the same budget and staff time. This article answers how to build that single list of channels on the levelpartner.ai platform and keep it consistent, so a referral partner and a search campaign can be compared without anyone feeling cheated.

Channels versus touches

Multi-channel and multi-touch are often used as if they meant the same thing. They do not. Multi-touch looks at the sequence of interactions one person has before buying. Multi-channel looks at the set of channels your business runs and how much each contributes overall.

You can do multi-channel attribution with single-touch data. A report that groups won revenue by first source, across a complete and consistent channel list, is multi-channel attribution. Most firms get more value from getting this right than from any multi-touch model.

Why the channel list matters most

The common failure is not the model. It is the list. One person tags campaigns "facebook", another "meta", a third "social-paid". Referrals are recorded as "referral" on some contacts and the referrer's name on others. Events are not recorded at all. The report then shows a dozen small fragments instead of six real channels.

A fixed list, used everywhere, turns the Lead Source Report and the source widgets into something you can act on. It should rarely change, perhaps once a year.

Before you start

  • A list of every route by which a new client has reached you in the last two years.
  • Agreement on how to group them into no more than ten channels.
  • Access to edit forms, tracking parameters and the source field on contacts.
  • A plan for channels with no digital trace, such as events and referrals.

How to set it up

  1. Group every past lead route into ten channels or fewer.
  2. Name each channel once, in lower case, with no spaces.
  3. Map old source values to the new names and update contacts in bulk.
  4. Use the same names in tracking parameters on all new campaigns.
  5. Add the channel list as dropdown options on your enquiry forms.
  6. Create a workflow that tags contacts from each referral partner's link.
  7. Log event contacts with the event channel at the moment of import.
  8. Add the Lead Source Report and read it over the last two quarters.

A sensible channel list for a service firm

Most agencies, consultants, mortgage brokers and real estate firms can work with something like this: paid search, paid social, organic search, email, referral, partner, events, print and broadcast, direct, and other. Ten is plenty. Detail such as campaign name and ad set belongs in the campaign field, not the channel field.

Illustration: a 55-person agency comparing six channels over two quarters

Imagine won revenue grouped by first source reads, in illustrative figures: referral £210,000, organic search £95,000, partner £80,000, paid search £60,000, events £40,000 and paid social £15,000. Now suppose that before the clean-up, referral was split across 30 different source values and looked like a minor channel. A tidy channel list alone would then change which channel the agency backs next.

What it replaces

It replaces separate reports per channel: the ad manager's report, the email tool's report, the events spreadsheet and the partner tracker. Each of those uses its own definition of success and quietly overstates its own channel. One report, one definition, one list stops the double counting. For the ad side specifically, see cross channel attribution on how paid channels hand off to each other.

Time it takes each week

The clean-up takes a day or two depending on how messy the history is. After that, about 15 minutes a week to check new contacts are landing in a known channel. Expect the monthly review to get shorter, because the arguing about whose numbers are right stops.

The mistake most people make

The common mistake

Leaving referrals and partners out because they are not marketing. For most service firms they are the largest source of revenue. Leave them out and every paid channel looks more important than it is, and nobody invests in the referral programme that actually feeds the business.

When not to use it

If you run one or two channels and know where your clients come from, a full channel framework is overhead. Record a source on each client and read the list. Multi-channel attribution earns its keep once you have four or more channels competing for money and attention.

Troubleshooting

"Other" becomes the largest channel. The dropdown is missing an obvious option, or people pick "other" to save time. Read the free-text answers and add a channel if one keeps recurring.

Old contacts still show old source names. The bulk update missed some values. Filter Contacts by source, sort alphabetically and catch the stragglers.

Partner referrals show as direct. The partner sends people to your home page without a link. Give each partner a tracked link and a short path on your domain.

Events produce contacts with no channel. The list was imported without a source. Add the source column to every import template.

Frequently asked questions

How is multi-channel different from omnichannel?

Omnichannel describes the customer experience, being consistent across channels. Multi-channel attribution is the measurement side: which channels produce revenue. You can have one without the other.

Should email count as a channel if it only nurtures existing contacts?

Count it when it brings in a new contact, such as through a forward or a newsletter sign-up. For contacts already in your CRM, email shows up as a later touch, which matters in multi touch attribution rather than here.

How many channels is too many?

More than ten usually means campaigns are being treated as channels. Push the detail into the campaign field and keep the channel list short.

Can we see channel performance on a dashboard?

Yes. Build a revenue-by-channel widget in Reporting, as covered in the marketing attribution dashboard article, and track media attribution for offline channels on the same screen.
