Mobile attribution: how it works and how to set it up

Mobile attribution means knowing which campaign produced an enquiry that happened on a phone: a tap to call, a form filled on a mobile page, a message or a chat. For a service business without its own app, this is where a large share of enquiries now start and where tracking most often breaks. Many firms assume they need app-style tools, but most mobile leads never install anything. This article answers which mobile journeys you actually need to measure, how to capture each one on the levelpartner.ai platform, and where an app measurement tool fits if you do have an app.

Two meanings of mobile attribution

The term covers two different jobs. App marketers use it to mean tracking which ad led to an install and what the user did inside the app. That needs a dedicated measurement product and an app to measure.

For agencies, consultants, mortgage brokers and real estate firms, mobile attribution usually means something simpler and more valuable: recording what people do on their phones when they find you. Each of those actions is a touch, and each can be attributed if the route carries tracking.

The four mobile journeys that produce leads

Look at where your mobile enquiries come from before choosing tools. For most firms of 10 to 250 people there are four routes.

  • Tap to call. The person taps a number on an advert, search result or page and talks to someone.
  • Mobile form. They complete a short form in the phone's browser.
  • Message. They tap a link that opens a text, a WhatsApp chat or the chat widget.
  • App. They install your app and convert inside it.

Only the fourth needs a mobile measurement product. The first three are covered by tracking numbers, tagged links and the platform's forms and chat, all of which write the source to the contact.

Where mobile tracking breaks

Three places. Click-to-call, where a tap on a search ad or page reaches your main line with no record of where it came from. Switching devices, where someone sees an ad on a phone in the evening and fills the form on a work laptop next morning. And in-app browsers, where links opened inside social apps sometimes lose their parameters.

You cannot fix device switching completely. You can fix click-to-call with a number pool and reduce the in-app browser problem with short tagged links on your own domain.

Before you start

  • Landing pages built in Sites that load quickly and work at phone width.
  • An external number where tracked calls should ring, and budget for at least four pool numbers.
  • Forms short enough for a phone: name, mobile, email and one qualifying question.
  • SMS and the chat widget set up for follow-up and two-way replies.
  • Campaign parameters on every link shared in ads, social posts and texts.

How to set up call tracking for mobile

  1. List the pages phone visitors land on and their conversion route.
  2. Open Settings, then click Phone Numbers.
  3. Open the + Add Number dropdown and select Add Number Pool.
  4. Select Visitors Activity, choose All visitors, then Next: Create Pool.
  5. Enter the Number Name and set the Pool Size.
  6. Enter the Forwarding Number and the Swapping Number shown on your site.
  7. Tick the purchase acknowledgement, then click Next: Choose Numbers.
  8. Choose the tracking numbers, then click Next: Number Features.
  9. Set the Whisper Message and Call Recording, then click Activate Number.
  10. In Number Pools, open the three dots and select Number Pool Info.
  11. Copy the Normal Snippet Code.
  12. Open the website's Settings tab and paste it into Body Tracking code.
  13. Click Save, then test the page from an incognito window.

Once the pool is live, make a test enquiry through each route on a phone and check that the contact shows the right source. Then look at new contacts grouped by source on your dashboard after the first fortnight.

Where an app measurement tool fits

If you do have an app, an app measurement tool such as AppsFlyer handles the install side, and AppsFlyer mobile attribution data can be written onto the contact when a user converts. We do not describe third-party products here. When choosing one, check that it passes campaign data on conversion, identifies users by an email or ID you also hold, and fits your consent flow. The handover and what to do when the two systems disagree are covered in how app and CRM attribution disagree, and Singular mobile attribution lists what else to check.

What it does for a firm with flat revenue

When mobile enquiries are not tracked, they get lumped into "direct" or "phone". A campaign that produces most of its results as calls then looks like a failure on the report and is the first thing cut. Mobile attribution stops that happening.

It also exposes a common leak. Phones are where speed matters most: a person who taps to call during a lunch break will not wait for a callback tomorrow. Once every route carries a source, you can see which campaigns drive mobile enquiries and how many were lost to slow answering, which justifies a text-back on missed calls or an evening AI voice agent. Treat mobile calls as one of the touchpoints across the customer journey that deserves an owner.

Illustration: a 20-person mortgage brokerage tracking click-to-call

Say a brokerage runs search ads with a call extension, and its report shows 30 form leads a month from search. Once a number pool is live, suppose a further 55 calls a month turn up from the same ads, 22 of which become applications. In that case search would have been credited with 30 of the 85 enquiries it produces, barely a third of its real contribution.

Illustration: a 55-person brokerage missing calls after hours

Suppose two thirds of ad traffic arrives on phones. Once calls carry a source, the paid search campaign turns out to produce 140 calls a month, 35 of them missed outside office hours. A firm in that position might add an AI voice agent for evenings and keep a campaign it had planned to cut, because the missed calls, not the campaign, would be the weak point.

Time it takes each week

Set-up takes half a day to a day for a firm with three or four campaigns. Weekly upkeep is fifteen minutes: check the missed-call figures, the share of mobile contacts with no source and that new campaigns carry their tags. If the unattributed share grows, a page has lost its tracking snippet. Expect a short conversation with whoever answers the phones, because that is where mobile leads are won or lost.

The common mistake

Judging mobile campaigns on form fills alone. People on phones prefer to call or message. A campaign with few forms and many calls is often your best performer. Count calls, messages, chats and forms together for every mobile-heavy campaign.

When not to invest further

If your buyers are mostly businesses researching at desks over weeks, mobile touches are a small part of the story: track the calls, but do not build a separate mobile programme. If phone traffic is a small share and nearly all of it converts through one route, a tagged form and the pool are enough. Do not buy an app measurement product for a business without an app.

Troubleshooting

Calls come in but the contact has no source. The call reached your main number instead of a pool number. Check ad extensions and page footers for the old number.

The number does not swap on the page. The snippet sits on another site or page, or the pool tracks fewer visitors than you expect. Confirm the snippet is in Body Tracking code and test in an incognito window.

Social clicks arrive untagged. Some in-app browsers strip or rewrite links. Use a short path on your own domain that redirects with the tags added.

Message links lose the campaign. Pre-filled text is the only context a message carries. Use a different pre-filled message per campaign link and record the campaign on the contact.

The same person appears twice. They enquired on a phone and later on a laptop with a different email. Merge the duplicates in Contacts and keep the earliest source.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to do mobile attribution?

No. Calls, mobile forms, messages and chat can all be attributed with tracking numbers and tagged links. App measurement only matters if people convert inside an app.

Do we need a mobile measurement partner?

Only if you have an app and buy app-install ads. For web, call and text enquiries, the platform's source capture and number pools cover the job.

Can we see which device a lead used?

Page visit records usually indicate device type. The more useful split for decisions is by action: call, message or form, because that tells you how to staff the response.

Does SMS count as a mobile touch?

Yes. Replies to campaigns and clicks on tracked links in texts are recorded on the contact. Include them when you read multi channel attribution, and compare with media attribution for offline routes.
