Learn how to build sales funnels: how it works and how to set it up

If you want to learn how to build sales funnels, or want someone on your team to learn, the fastest route is a short programme of practice builds rather than a course. Reading about funnels teaches vocabulary. Building three small ones, each harder than the last, teaches the judgement. This article sets out a four-week learning plan for an operations or marketing lead at a firm of 10 to 250 people, with a practice project for each week on the levelpartner.ai platform.

Why practice beats theory here

Funnel courses tend to teach a single pattern and promise it fits every business. It does not. A consultant selling a diagnostic, a broker booking a fact-find and an estate agent offering a valuation need different funnels. The skill is choosing and adapting, and that only comes from building, testing and fixing.

Learning on a real platform with your own CRM also teaches the part courses skip: what happens after the form. Assignment, follow-up and pipeline stages are where most funnels fail, and you only see that by running one.

Who should learn this in your firm

Pick someone who already writes clearly and is close to sales, usually a marketing manager or an operations lead. They do not need design skills. They need to understand your buyers and be willing to look at numbers each week. Give them about four hours a week for the four weeks.

Before you start

  • Access to Sites, Automation, Calendars and Opportunities on the platform.
  • A test domain path or subdomain for practice funnels, so nothing goes live by accident.
  • A test contact with an email address and mobile number the learner controls.
  • One real offer the firm would like a funnel for, to use in week four.

How to set it up

  1. Week one: go to Sites, open Funnels and click New Funnel.
  2. Choose From Blank and build a checklist opt-in page.
  3. Create a workflow with a Form Submitted trigger and Send Email.
  4. Week two: in the Pages drawer, click Add New Page for a booking page.
  5. Add a Wait action set to the upcoming appointment.
  6. Week three: add Create Opportunity to the workflow.
  7. Open the funnel's Stats tab and read views and opt-ins.
  8. Week four: build the real funnel using all three practice builds.
  9. Review it with the sales lead before you click Publish.

What to look for at each stage

At the end of week one, the learner should be able to explain where a submitted lead goes and why. At the end of week two, they should be able to tell you what happens if someone opts in but does not book. By week three, they should be reading the report and naming the weakest step. If any of these is shaky, repeat that week before moving on.

The sales funnel stages guide is useful reading alongside week three, and the funnel building guide covers the page builder in more depth.

Picture a marketing lead given four hours a week for four weeks. Week one would produce a working checklist opt-in, and week two would add a booking step and reminders. In week three, test data would show how the report flags a missed reminder. By week four, the lead could build a remortgage review funnel and put it live once the head of sales has reviewed it.

What it costs and what it replaces

Four weeks of four hours is about two working days in total. It replaces the habit of sending every small funnel change to an outside designer, which usually means a week's wait for a text edit. After the programme, your learner can build simple funnels and fix most problems the same day.

The common mistake

Learning on the live website. A practice funnel on your main domain can be indexed or found by a client. Keep practice builds on a test path and unpublish them when the week is done.

When learning in-house is the wrong call

If nobody in the firm has four hours a week to spare, or the person who would learn is about to leave, outsourcing the build is the better use of money. Keep one person who understands the basics, so you can brief and check the work. The guide to done for you funnels explains what to ask for.

Troubleshooting

Practice emails go to spam. The sending domain is not verified. Finish the domain records before week one starts.

Test leads trigger real sales alerts. The practice workflow assigns to a real salesperson. Assign practice opportunities to the learner.

The learner copies a template without understanding it. Ask them to rebuild the same page from blank. If they cannot, they have not learned it yet.

Week four stalls on copy. Writing is the bottleneck, not the builder. Have the sales lead dictate the offer in five minutes and work from that.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a course to learn how to build sales funnels?

No. A course can give useful vocabulary, but most of the skill comes from building and fixing real funnels. A structured month of practice on your own platform gets further than most courses.

How long before someone can build funnels on their own?

After four weeks of practice, a capable learner can build a standard two or three step funnel unaided. More complex builds with payments and branching follow-up take a few more months of real work.

What should the learner read alongside the practice?

Start with the overview of the sales funnel, then how to build a click funnel for the click-through pattern. Read each guide in the week its topic comes up, not all at once.
