A B2B marketing funnel is the part of your growth system that turns strangers at other companies into contacts who are ready for a sales conversation. It ends where sales begins. If you sell to businesses, your buyers research for weeks, involve colleagues and rarely book a call from a first visit. This article covers the marketing half only: how to attract the right people, capture them with something worth their email, and nurture them until they raise a hand, all on the levelpartner.ai platform.
Why business buyers need a longer marketing path
A consumer might buy on the first visit. A business buyer cannot. They have to justify the spend to a director, compare options and fit the decision into a budget cycle. If your marketing only offers "book a call", you capture the small share who are ready today and lose everyone who will be ready next quarter.
The marketing funnel keeps those future buyers. It gives them something useful now, records who they are, and stays in touch until they are ready. For agencies, consultants, mortgage brokers selling to employers and commercial real estate firms, that patience is where most revenue comes from.
Before you start
- A clear ideal buyer: company size, sector and the role that usually starts the conversation.
- One piece of content worth an email address to that role: a benchmark, a template, a short guide.
- A rule for when a contact counts as sales-ready, agreed with the sales lead.
- An email sending domain set up, with the domain records verified.
How to set it up
- Go to Sites, open Funnels and click New Funnel.
- Choose From Blank, name the funnel and open the Funnel Editor.
- Add a form asking for name, work email, company and role.
- Click Save, then Publish the page.
- In Automation, open Workflows and click + Create Workflow.
- Choose Start from scratch.
- Click Add New Trigger and choose Form Submitted.
- Add the Form Is filter, select your form and save.
- Add a Send Email action that delivers the guide straight away.
- Add a Wait action, then the next nurture email.
- Repeat the wait and email pair for six to eight weeks.
- Add a Goal Event so contacts who book leave the nurture.
- Turn on the Publish toggle, then click Save.
What the nurture should actually say
Most B2B nurture sequences fail because every email is a pitch. Write each one as a short, practical note your buyer could forward to a colleague: a method, a checklist, an answer to a common question. One email in four can invite a conversation. The rest earn the right to ask.
Because the buyer often is not the decision-maker, give them material they can use internally: a one-page summary, a comparison, a cost model. That makes them your champion in a meeting you are not in. For how this hands over to sales, see the companion guide to the B2B sales funnel.
Say a firm offers a production cost benchmark and, in a quarter, 300 operations managers download it. The nurture sends one practical email a week. If 40 score above the threshold by week eight and sales books calls with 18 of them, that is 6% of downloads reaching a conversation. The other 260 would stay on the list, and some could become ready the following quarter.
Time each week and what it replaces
Once built, the marketing funnel needs about two hours a week: one to write or review the next content piece, one to check which emails people engage with. It replaces sporadic newsletters and trade show lists that sit in a spreadsheet.
Handing every download to sales. A download is interest, not intent. Sales calls a contact who only wanted the template, the contact feels pushed, and sales stops trusting marketing leads. Agree a threshold and stick to it.
When not to build one
If your market is small enough that you can name every potential buyer, a marketing funnel is the wrong tool. Account-based outreach to named contacts will work better. The funnel suits markets where you cannot know every buyer by name. The guide to marketing funnel stages explains how each stage maps to buyer behaviour.
Troubleshooting
Downloads come mostly from personal email addresses. Your content attracts individuals, not companies. Make the offer more specific to the role and the business problem, and require a work email.
Lead scores never reach the threshold. The threshold is set too high or the scoring events are too rare. Review the scores of contacts who did book, and set the threshold just below theirs.
Unsubscribes climb after the third email. The emails are too frequent or too salesy. Drop to fortnightly and make each one useful on its own.
Sales says the leads are poor. Ask which ones and why. Usually the company size or role field shows a pattern you can filter on.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a B2B nurture sequence run?
Six to eight weeks for the first sequence, then a monthly newsletter for everyone who did not convert. Business buying cycles are long. A contact who goes quiet in week four may be ready in month five.
Should I gate all my content behind a form?
No. Keep most content open so it can rank and be shared. Gate one or two pieces that are clearly worth an email, such as a template or benchmark. The lead funnel guide covers how to choose which.
How is this different from a general marketing funnel?
The stages are the same, but business buyers involve more people and take longer. That means more weight on nurture and on material the buyer can share internally. For the general version, see the guide to the marketing funnel.
